Buried Shrine Gate in Kurokami
The Great Eruption of 1914 sent vast quantities of volcanic ash and pumice soaring more than 20,000 meters into the sky, with some ash even reaching the distant Kamchatka Peninsula. The torii gate of the “Haragosha Shrine” located here in the Kurokami district was covered with pumice and volcanic ash in just one day after the Taisho eruption. The torii originally stood 3 meters high, but now only about 1 meter of the shade tree portion is visible above the ground.
After the eruption, the residents tried to dig up the sacred torii gate of the shrine, but the village mayor at the time, Mr. Yaozo Nozoe, made the wise decision to “preserve the memory of the eruption for future generations,” and the shrine remains today as it was immediately after the eruption. At the end of the approach behind the torii gate, there is also a shrine pavilion.
Local Staff Tip
Other popular spots include Tsukiyomi Shrine, known for its 1,300-year history, and Itsukushima Shrine, with its torii gate in the sea.

How to Enjoy Strolling
Sakurajima's eruption warning levels 1-3 are normal for volcanic activity and tourist facilities.
Although the area within 2 km of the crater is off-limits,
all tourist facilities are at least 2.5 km away and can be safely explored.
However, small eruptions and ash falls occur on a daily basis,
so it is recommended to prepare glasses, folding umbrellas, hats, masks, and towels.
A walking path developed
on a lava field
The approximately 3km long walking path connecting Sakurajima Lava Seaside Park and Karasujima Observatory is developed on a lava field. The lava Nagisa Park also has one of the largest outdoor footbaths in Japan (100 meters long, free of charge).
Observe changes
in vegetation and lava
The vegetation around Sakurajima has been devastated by numerous large-scale eruptions, but over time, nature has regenerated, and forests have formed. Within the island, you can observe lava formations from different eras and the process of natural plant regeneration.
Kinko Bay (Kagoshima Bay) Views
Kinko Bay (Kagoshima Bay) seen from Sakurajima attracts visitors with its magnificent view, which has been selected as one of the 100 most scenic spots in Japan. Sakurajima is surrounded by coastline, making it a great spot for viewing sunsets and night views.
