How to Get to Yunohira Observatory

Yunohira Observatory is located about 7 km (373 meters above sea level) from the Sakurajima Visitor Center.

  • Sakurajima Island View Bus
    The bus stops at Yunohira Observatory while visiting various attractions. A one-day pass, which allows you to hop on and off, is recommended.
  • By Car, Rental Car, or Taxi
    About 15 minutes.
  • On Foot
    About 2 hours.
  • By Bicycle
    Cycling is not recommended due to the steep uphill terrain.
How to Get to Arimura Lava Observatory

By Car: About 20 minutes from the Sakurajima Visitor Center.
By Bicycle: About 1.5 hours.
By Bus:Take a bus bound for Tarumizu Port from either Sakurajima Port or Sakurajima Shunsaikan (located on the way back to the ferry terminal from the Visitor Center).
Bus schedules are available at the Visitor Center reception.

Near the Visitor Center

  • Michi-no-Eki Sakurajima Hinoshima-Megumi-kan Restaurant "Ofukuro no Aji Shun"
    About an 8-minute walk from the Visitor Center.
  • MINATO CAFE
    Located on the 3rd floor of the Sakurajima Ferry Terminal, about a 10-minute walk from the Visitor Center.

  • cafe Shirahama
    A farm-to-table restaurant near Shirahama Onsen Center, about a 15-minute drive from the Visitor Center.
  • Tsubaki no Sato
    A restaurant specializing in camellia oil champon, located near Kurokami Buried Torii Gate, about a 30-minute drive.
  • Ajinosato Chinman
    A casual eatery near Sakushu Elementary School, about a 5-minute drive.

Additional bakeries and deli shops are available on the island, though most operate during lunchtime only. Please check with each establishment for details.

Recommended Hot Springs in Sakurajima

There are three hot spring locations in Sakurajima.

  • Magma Onsen (Rainbow Sakurajima Inn)
    Adjacent to the Visitor Center, this popular hot spring offers views of Kinko Bay, ferries, and the Kagoshima cityscape.
  • Shirahama Onsen
    Located on the northern side of the island, this local hot spring is highly praised for its excellent water quality. Note: No shampoo or soap is provided, but they can be purchased at the entrance.
  • Furusato Onsen
    Situated on the southern side of the island, this hot spring offers a public bath at the hotel. The view of the sea from the open-air bath is stunning. (Available to hotel guests only)

Places Accessible on Foot from the Visitor Center
  • Lava Nagisa Park
    Located directly in front of the Visitor Center, the park features a 100-meter-long foot bath open until sunset. (Towels are available at the Visitor Center for ¥500.)
  • Lava Nagisa Walking Trail
    A 3 km walking trail along the coastline, starting from Lava Nagisa Park.
  • Karasujima Observatory
    Accessible via the Lava Nagisa Walking Trail (about 45 minutes, 3 km) or the Super Magma Road (about 30 minutes, 2 km).
  • Michi-no-Eki Sakurajima Hinoshima Megumikan
    About an 8-minute walk from the Visitor Center, this roadside station features a souvenir shop, specialty product corner, and restaurant.
  • Tsukiyomi Shrine
    A historic shrine with over 1,300 years of history, located about a 12-minute walk from the Visitor Center near the Sakurajima Port Ferry Terminal.

Is There a Convenience Store Nearby?

Yes, there are two convenience stores within a 5–6 minute walk from the Visitor Center: FamilyMart and Lawson.
Additionally, a supermarket, A-Coop, is located about a 4-minute walk away.

Are There Beaches in Sakurajima?

Yes, Sakurajima features Rainbow Beach, an artificial beach designed for families. Located directly in front of the Rainbow Sakurajima Inn, next to the Visitor Center, it operates only during the summer vacation period from late July to the end of August.
